The Gloster Fancy Canary – Second Edition
In 2009, Nick and Annalain Barrett proudly launched the long-awaited second edition of their acclaimed book, The Gloster Fancy Canary. More than twenty years after the publication of the original edition, the revised and expanded volume reflected decades of additional experience, knowledge, and success in breeding and exhibiting one of the world's most popular exhibition canaries.
The launch of the second edition was a truly historic occasion, taking place in Malta at the Grand Hotel Excelsior Malta. It marked the first time that a major publication dedicated solely to the Gloster Fancy Canary had been officially launched in Malta, recognising the country's growing influence within the international Gloster Fancy. The event brought together leading breeders and judges from across Europe and celebrated the close friendship that had developed between the Barretts and the Maltese Gloster community.
The second edition was published following encouragement from Maltese fanciers, particularly after it became clear that the original 1987 edition had become extremely scarce and highly sought after by breeders around the world. Rather than simply reprinting the original book, Nick and Annalain completely revised and expanded its contents, incorporating the knowledge they had accumulated through decades of breeding, judging, and studying the Gloster Fancy.
Covering every aspect of the breed, the book explores the history and development of the Gloster, breeding principles, genetics, feather quality, colour, exhibition preparation, judging standards, and stock management. Richly illustrated throughout, it has become an indispensable reference for both newcomers and experienced breeders striving to produce exhibition-quality Glosters.
