Alongside our renowned Beef Shorthorn herd, Glenariff is proud to maintain a select herd of pedigree Galloway cattle, one of Britain's oldest and purest native beef breeds. Originating from the rugged south-west of Scotland, Galloways have earned a reputation for their hardiness, efficiency, and ability to thrive in a wide range of environments.

Their distinctive appearance and exceptional adaptability make them a valuable addition to our livestock enterprise and an important part of our commitment to preserving traditional British breeds.
The quality and reputation of the Glenariff herd have also been recognised beyond the farm. As part of an initiative to help regenerate and strengthen the diminishing Galloway population in England, Natural England invested in introducing a selection of Galloway cattle to the environmentally important Dersingham Bog National Nature Reserve in Norfolk. For this significant conservation grazing project, Natural England chose to draw upon the expertise of Nick and Annalain Barrett, entrusting them with the responsibility of supplying and developing the herd. The project highlights the breed's importance not only as a traditional beef animal but also as a valuable conservation grazer capable of managing sensitive habitats while preserving biodiversity.
Galloways are naturally polled, meaning they are born without horns, and are renowned for their calm temperament, easy calving, strong maternal instincts, and longevity. Cows are generally of small to medium size, weighing between 450 and 600 kilograms, while mature bulls typically weigh around 800 kilograms and can exceed 1,000 kilograms. Heifer calves are usually born at approximately 35 kilograms and can reach around 250 kilograms by thirteen to fourteen months of age.
One of the breed's most distinctive characteristics is its thick double-layered coat. The outer layer consists of long, wavy or curly guard hairs that effectively shed rain and protect the animal from the elements, whilst the dense woolly undercoat provides excellent insulation during colder weather. This natural protection allows Galloways to thrive outdoors throughout the year and reduces the need for excessive body fat, contributing to their efficiency as a beef-producing animal. During the warmer months, the coat naturally sheds to help regulate body temperature.
The breed's ability to convert forage efficiently, combined with its resilience and low-maintenance nature, makes it particularly well suited to modern sustainable farming systems. Galloways are highly valued for producing premium-quality beef that is renowned for its tenderness, flavour, and natural marbling.
